Best Kitesurfing locations – Caribbean

How is the best way to learn to kiteboard? Where is the best place? How long will it take me to learn? These questions we answer almost daily. When people want to learn how to kiteboard there are more questions than answers. Finding reliable and up-to-date information on the web can be a confusing ordeal, so in this post we look to help clear up the learning process that happens when people are learning how to be safe and independent kiteboarders. First, it is important to view the learning process, as a process. Kiteboarding is more than just riding the board; there are a lot of skills that are needed to get to that point. Or course, riding the board is most people’s priority, but is should be viewed as one of many goals in the learning process. Other goals include: launching and landing your kite, retrieving your board and kite, upwind riding. So when you learn to kiteboard, it is important to find a location and school that allows you to practice these skills, while being in a safe, kiter-friendly environment. The easier it is to focus on each skill, the easier and faster it is to learn. Being in large, open and uncrowded area, preferably with warm steady wind and waist deep water will speed up your learning curve. It is also important to learn with an instructional method that teaches fundamental skills that will lead to better riding, once you are ready. Skills such as powering and depowering your kite, one and two-handed flying and efficient relaunching will also speed up learning. Spending some time learning these skills takes the...

What is Bioluminescence?

This is a very common questions from people when they hear about our Bioluminescence Tours The answer is both simple and complex; The simple answer is: Bio = life  Luminescence = Emission of light. So bio-luminescence is light that is emitted by a living organism. This light is produced using biologically produced chemicals in a living organism, usually from a protein in the Luciferin family. It is similar reaction as in glowsticks, except in glowsticks the light is chemical-luminescence. In Bio-luminescence the protein mixes with a catalyst which creates and oxidation-reduction which also produces photons. It is a relatively simple and energy-efficient reaction that produces a lot of light. The more complex answer is that it is not just 1 or 2 types of organisms that produce bioluminescence. There are literally thousands, even hundreds of thousands, of organisms that have the ability to create some sort of bioluminescence. There is a huge variety in the types of organisms using bioluminescence; from microscopic single-cell dinoflagelletes to complex animals like fish and octopus and every thing in between. Mostly found in salt water, but there are many terrestrial organisms that produce bioluminescence, including lightning bugs, glow worms and many types of insects. The reasoning behind bioluminescent organisms producing light is as varied as the animals themselves. Some use the light for protection, blinding or confusing potential predators. Others use it to draw attention to themselves, either to attract mates or prey. In the deep dark ocean bioluminescence is a very efficient way to communicate, and could be used by as many as 80% of all creatures below 300ft.  So chances are that if...

Bright Bio-luminescence in Cayman and Honduras!

Spectacular light shows from multiple types of bioluminescent organisms!!  Not only are the conditions in the Bio Bay excellent right now, but the glowing Threadworms put on some of their best displays ever this Full Moon period.  Bioluminescent Threadworms are small worms that give off a big light display during their monthly mating rituals. When the females swim to the surface and lays her “eggs” in a bioluminescent mucus sack while glowing herself. The males see this glowing signal from below and dart to the surface to fertilize the eggs, as they glow in multiple colors. Truly a sight to be seen.  Seeing this bioluminescent ritual requires good time and good luck. The worms only do their mating a couple days after the full moon and only for 1 hour after sunset. Usually illuminating in groups in small areas for 10-15 minutes, then vanishing for the night.  Fortunately our tours have been in the right place at the right time and we have been surrounded by 100s of glowing worms, lighting up the water like Chinese lanterns.  Want to experience this amazing phenomenon? Contact us to arrange your tour in the Cayman Islands or Guanaja, Honduras. Home of 2 of the brightest Bio Bays in the World!  We do tours by boat, kayak or stand-up paddleboard each night that the conditions allow.
